Skipping Madness for the British Heart Foundation
Today we completed the 'Jump Rope for Heart' challenge in support of the British Heart Foundation. We have been training for a few weeks and learnt a lot of new skills. Today was the challenge! We completed a skipping circuit where we showed our single skipping skills, such as slalom jumps, toe taps, cross overs and many more. We showed great co-ordination with our partner work and long rope jumping and worked up a sweat with our speed jumps! We then had some relay races and showed what we could do with the long ropes. Even some of the staff and grown-ups had a go!
It was great fun and so far we have managed to raise over £400 for the British Heart Foundation through sponsership. A big thank you to everyone who has sponsored us and came along to support us.
We have really enjoyed this challenge and have found a new skill that we really enjoy.

Is it fair???
This afternoon Key Stage 2 have been thinking about Fairttrade. First of all we looked at all the jobs that were involved in getting tea bags into our shops and found out that there are 10 or possibly more jobs. Lots of people work hard to bring us our beloved cup of tea! Then we were given different roles in groups. Our roles were all people who were involved in growing, shipping and selling bananas. Have a look at the different roles in our photos. We explained who we were to each other - The banana worker, the plantation owner, the shipper, the importer and ripener and the supermarket/shop. Then, Mrs Basker told us that an average banana costs 30p. We had to decide how to split that 30p between 5 people and who deserved the most or the least! Have a look at our sheets to see how we split it. What would you do? Two of our groups thought that the money should be split equally and gave 6p to each person. We are very kind and honest people! Two of our groups thought that the banana worker, who works long and hard, should get the most amount of money and one group thought the plantation owner should get the most. One member of each group went to the front and we found out how much they actually got paid. We were SHOCKED! Mrs Basker paid the shopkeeper 30p for the banana. The shopkeeper kept 13p and gave the rest to the importer and ripener. He kept 7p and gave the rest to the shipper. The shipper kept 4p and gave the rest to the plantation owner and he gave ONLY 1p to the banana worker. Can you believe how unfair this is? We talked about how we can make it fairer to all these workers. The fairtrade mark shows us which products ensure that the workers are well looked after and are given a fair price for their produce. Have a look out for these when you are in the supermarket next!
Let's Get Cooking
Barton Cooking Club started again today! We have 9 members from Foundation Stage to Year 5. During out first session we talked about how to keep safe and be hygienic. Today we made summer fruit kebabs and pear and pineapple smoothies. We did a lot of chopping and we were very good at it! The kebabs were made up of strawberries, grapes and melon. Unfortunately, some of us ate a lot of the fruit before it made it onto the skewers! The pear and pineapple smoothies were whizzed up until they were nice and fluffy! They were delicious! Next week, we can't cook because it is a bank holiday but the following week we will be making Tasty Tomato Pasta. Mrs Basker has ordered a lovely new cooking trolley to store our equipment on so hopefully it will have arrived by then! Thank you to our grown up members of the club who helped us.
